“Now I see that there is truth in what you are doing”

xxxxxx NAMN på BILD Ahmed*, one of our translators from the Caucasus, was in Moscow in April to work with the translation consultant. Ahmed is a short, energetic man with warm, dark eyes.

“My grandmother was strongly opposed to anything to do with Christianity,” Ahmed related. “When she heard that I had become a Christian she was extremely upset, and when she understood that I had moreover begun to work on the translation of the Bible into Kabardian, she scolded me. ‘What are you doing? Why are you doing this? You know that we are Muslims!’

“But later, when she saw the result of my work, I began to notice a change in her. She would say: ‘Perhaps I could hear just a little of your translation,’ and I would read a couple of verses to her. Gradually her attitude altered, but it took a long time.

“My grandmother grew very old, and when she fell ill she asked me to read to her from the Kabardian translation. ‘Now I see there is truth in what you are doing,’ she said. During her last days I sat beside her, reading from my translation. Just before she died she asked Jesus into her heart – and died in peace.”
